Most people know the world of precious stones composed of precious and semi-precious gems. The gemstones are diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald, and semi-precious stones include the most common stones such as amethyst, topaz and garnet. But the world of jewelry is much richer than this simplified picture.
In fact, there are over 100 different varieties of gemstones. Many are rare and exotic, but the Internet has made it possible to find gems dealers that trade many rare varieties.
What is behind the growing interest in rare and exotic jewels? It's not just collectors of gemstones that are in search of rare and unusual. Jewelry designers are finding new colors and textures to incorporate into their designs, and consumers are hungry for information about lesser-known stones. Miners now understand that there is a market for these stones and material that was once ignored is now carefully collected and sorted.
One of the new gem types are not exactly new. Some, such as prehnite, apatite and sphene have been known for years but have not been used much in jewelry, because were too soft. But the jewelry designers have realized that these stones are actually more durable than perennial favorites such as opal, and when properly established or dangling earrings that will last many years.
Other gems on the lesser known are actually very durable and are suitable even for rings. Many of them – as chrysoprase, agate, dendritic agate, rutilated quartz and fire – are members of the quartz family and have very good hardness and not division.
Many lesser-known gems are relatively inexpensive. That makes them economically attractive for jewelry designers. But as for many precious stones, supplies are variable and uncertain. You will not find all the different types of gemstones available in the market at any given time. The precious jewelry always be found, but many semi precious stones like garnet and alexandrite demantoid are actually rarer than diamond or ruby.
